FRIENDS OF THE UFFIZI GALLERY

On May 27, 1993, a bomb exploded on via dei Georgofili, in Florence, seriously damaging the Uffizi Gallery and several important works of art inside.  The Association came into existence on July 8 with the immediate goal of establishing a direct line between private citizens, companies, organisations, etc. desirous of contributing to repairing the damage, and the Gallery direction, which could therefore count on immediately available funds.  The Association also took shape, however, in the broader perspective of supporting and promoting all the initiatives and activities, the implementation of which requires the flexibility that only a private association can have. "To demonstrate the supremacy of culture over barbarity.":  this is the raison d'être of the “Friends of the Uffizi Association”, which was formed on July 9, 1993, following the via dei Georgofili bombing, perpetrated on May 27 of that same year. Its founders include personalities tied to the Uffizi, as well as private citizens, businessmen and institutions, which through the Association intend to offer the entire world, the possibility to contribute to the preservation and growth of the great patrimony that is the Uffizi Gallery. The Association has an international vocation, and intends to operate inspired by the analogous associations which support the world’s major museums. The first actions of the “Friends of the Uffizi” were aimed at restoring the damage caused by the May 27, 1993 bombing.  In parallel, the Association has undertaken a further series of actions of an importance and breadth, closely tied to the resources made available by the contributions of the “Friends of the Uffizi”. Friends of the Uffizi” is an Association which draws its resources exclusively from the voluntary contributions of individuals, institutions, organisations, businesses and other associations, both Italian and international, that share its purpose.  It has been recognised by the regional government of Tuscany as an ONLUS Association (non profit-making organisation of social utility). Its primary purpose is to promote all the initiatives of a cultural, service or other nature which can contribute to making the Uffizi Gallery known, prized and valorised. It intends to perform divulgative, educational and promotional activities in favour of the Uffizi.  Its commitments include promoting the publication of catalogues, reproductions, illustrative materials and books, as well as incrementing the Museum’s library and photographic records. Moreover, it seeks to promote the collection of funds to destine to the purchase of artworks to donate to the Uffizi, and to employ furthermore for the maintenance, protection, conservation and restoration of the existing collections.
